Move Solutions sensors helped monitor Beirut silos

Two years ago, an explosion in the city’s port killed more than 200 people and injured thousands in Beirut, Lebanon. Although their structure was heavily affected, some grain silos present on the premises had held in place until July 31st, 2022 when a second collapse took place. Also, local medias shared four towers left collapsed after being detached from the already damaged structure by the blast of the devastating explosion on August 4, 2020. This is the second accident in four days.

In order to follow the evolution of the movements of the structure of these huge grain tanks, Move Solutions tilt sensors have been installed. Emmanuel Durant, the civil engineer in charge of monitoring these silos, explains that before the 2nd collapse on July 31st, the structure was tilting at a maximum rate of 0.5 millimeters per day. Two weeks ago, the movements of the structure accelerated to a speed of 2 millimeters per hour, allowing authorities to establish a security perimeter and anticipate the collapse of the tanks.

In this case, we can say that the structural tilt sensors saved lives!
